Re: Tuesday, April 6, 2004
Doc,
I chose the CP5700 for much the same reasons (and the fact that it's easy to hold steady, something the more compact models lack) and I'm very happy with it after a month or two. Here are a few things I've learned.
1. Manual focus: Not worth the bother unless you're going for special effects.
2. Macro mode: easy. Press the macro button to light up the little flower indicator, then move the zoom until the flower turns yellow (a range in the center of the zoom range). Point, focus, shoot.
3. You should turn off "continuous focus" and set the focus zone to center or manual rather than automatic. This will help (but not solve) the low-light problems.
4. Batteries: Go to http://www.sterlingtek.com/ and buy a couple of their replacement batteries for the 5700. They're not the official Nikon battery, but they last 95% as long in my experience. And they're $11 apiece. Now that I have three batteries, one stays in the charger and I never have complaints about battery life.
5. There are some helpful folks in the Nikon Talk forum at dpreview.com, but you already know that. Also some amazing pictures from the 5700 posted regularly.
This page has a bunch of useful information about accessories (lenses, hoods, etc.)

Enjoy! I think you'll learn to appreciate it.
