Interim
| | There's a scene in one of the early Star Trek movies (the first one, perhaps?) where somebody (Kirk's squeeze?) gets beamed improperly and manifests for a few moments before their demise as a formless mess of protoplasm. Or something. |
| | For some reason, my office move brings this to mind. Everything is in boxes, including lots of stuff I need to function. The painters and carpenters aren't done with the new place, and lots more stuff remains to be moved not just for the office, but for the whole house. I'd show ya pictures, but I don't know where the camera is. |
| | I'm typing this on my lap at the old place. I think it'll be my last post for the day, and perhaps for the week. Tomorrow morning I fly to somewhere in Mexico for a Linux Journal retreat, and I won't be back until Saturday night. I don't think I'll be taking this latpop with me, either. Instead I'll be taking the new ThinkPad T-40 Linux machine to which I'm gradually moving my digital life. I have no idea what the connectivity will be like down there, either. So hold off on the email for awhile, too. |

you'll probably get a million replies, but I'm pretty sure that 1)yes it's the first movie, 2)No, it's not Kirk's squeeze, it's a (Vulcan) crewmember.

Doc,
I live in Mexico. I don't know where you're going to be but I would say if you're staying in a 4 or 5 star hotel, your chances are 50/50 that they will have some type of Internet connection (odds improve with international chains like Holiday Inn Express, Four Seasons, Mariott, etc.).
Many of the ubiquitous Sanborns restaurants now have wireless access (Prodigy Movil)although they charge. They now have pre-paid cards available or you might be able to work something out at the restaurant but I've never tried that. Here is the page where you can consult locations ( http://www.prodigy.com.mx/cgi-bin/cdprodig/localidades/pl_buscador.jsp?scriptId=BProdigyMov ). They also have coverage in some airports and other places.
If you are in a fairly decent sized metro area, there is also a fairly high probability of finding an unprotected hot spot. Business districts and well-to-do residential neighborhoods are your best bets.
Buen viaje!
Daniel

Thanks!
I'll be in a former Westin in Ixtapa. That's all I know so far.

Sounds like Las Brisas ( http://www.brisas.com.mx/English/Ixtapa/default.asp ). Beautiful building with a secluded beach. A lot of people love it although my wife and I moved out of there once because they gave us a very small and kind of crappy room.
Unless things have changed, you're stuck with dial-up in the rooms or a wired Net connection in the business center.
Have fun!
Daniel

Maybe too late but . . .
Unfortunately they don't appear to have an access number in the state of Guerrero, which is where Ixtapa is located. Mexico City may be about the closest but it will be Mexico long distance so it would be a good idea to check the LD rates that the hotel will be charging you before connecting.
Good luck!
