I think it's related to Freeway being a southern CA term. It's 'Highway 101' vs 'The 101 (Freeway)'. The Pasadena Freeway was the first. The sharp radius turns and short on/off ramps tell how much slower traffic moved in those days. btw: The 10 West becomes 1 North at the coast in Santa Monica. By the time you get there, it won't save you any time getting to SB but it's much better for the soul.
