I think the "fan" function and others in Orkut handle most of the "get more acquainted" needs. Be nice to say you're a fan of somebody before you buck 'em down. Meanwhile, it just makes sense to me to say "I know So N. So" in cases where they're close acquaintences than it does to say "So N. So is my friend" when they're not. Yet.
