The only problem is that us rural folk distrust people who reinvent themselves.
According to James Fallows, in his book "Not like us", reinventing yourself is the quintessential capability that makes Americans different from other cultures. So while it's not surprising that some people distrust those who reinvent themselves, it's not valid to imply that this distrust is somehow basic to American culture--the opposite is true.
