Re: Web logs versus Web pages
Because this article was originally about webcasts and now RSS has come up, I can't resist mentioning how Whole Wheat Radio uses RSS feeds. It all seems to tie together somehow. Our EJs (electronic DJs - okay, 'bots') check RSS feeds of listener's blogs every 30 minutes for updates. If listeners in our chat are discussing a subject that the EJs find in a recent blog entry, they post a notice in the chat with a link to the blog entry. We also use a blo.gs 'favorites' list to notify listeners whenever a blog in the list has been updated. The EJs have voice capabilites (synthesized voices) that come on the air and notify listeners that blogs are updated.
Anyway, this all seems to tie in with the idea of 'people powered' webcasts that are truly interactive with listeners. Whole Wheat Radio goes way beyond just 'request lines'. And, I gotta tell you, it's an incredibly rewarding experience to join these technical pieces together between blogs, non-RIAA music webcasting, synthesized voices and on-mic work.
