Unsucking Radio
Doc...excellent thoughts on the radio biz as usual. Your railroads vs. cars analogy is perfect. Having spent a lot of time in a radio station growing up, and what could be considered an addiction to listening to the radio, I have always believed that most people in radio are perfectly happy just being railroad tycoons.
This of course is the root of the problem you bring up, and why other mediums like satellite radio and the Internet are cutting into "their" audience. I think most stations out there don't see either as a real threat on a local level.
Of course Woolworth didn't fear Sears, Sears didn't fear Wal-Mart, and Wal-Mart doesn't fear Target. I think we know who ate who at the end of the day. I love terrestrial radio, but I think it will eventually become a telegraph while we're all using cell phones.
Cheers,
