Doc, I had hiccups with various apps after I did an "upgrade" install (Safari 1.1 in particular). Went back and did an "archive and install" afterward and no more bad app behavior. Not sure how far "left" you want to go in Column View, but can't you just click on the drive icon and be as far left as you can go? Plus, you can Command-click on the icon in the title bar and see the entire path regardless of whether or not you have the tool bar showing or not, and you can navigate on that list just fine.
