Interesting about Snow.
As for RDS, it's been in about half of the cars I've rented lately. Ford Focus among them.
I've been an RDS fan ever since they came up with it in Europe and here in the U.S. we immediately perverted it to a dumbed-down "RDBS" standard that nobody followed. Now that single owners hold so many stations, and so many stations have so many translators and secondary slave signals in outlying markets, it would make complete sense for the NPRs and Clear Channels of the world to institute euro-style RDS on the transmit side. Not sure the current round of car radios would handle the hand-off aspect of the system (whereby, say, your receiver in San Francisco would shift from KFOG on 104.5 to its other station in the South Bay on 97.7, while the radio just said "KFOG"); but it might work in the next round.
Good source material at the RDS Forum.
