I think personally I'd characterize it as one of the first bloggy sites. Although not a true blog, members have the option of posting their own material in the diaries section. (I remember when that was added...) But probably what is more important about K5 is open story queue--which gives everyone an editorial vote, and to a lesser extent the reputation economy.
