And sometimes the most precious things are free. Like EGR, for example.
The latest EGR just arrived, and man, the dude just nails it. Nominally an Election Day Message, it's about Fundamentals. Usually RageBoy makes me laugh, but every once in a while he gives me chills. This is one of those whiles.
My favorite line (among too many good ones to list without replicating the whole tome): When everything has a price, nothing is precious. Wow.
And will I get credit for the miles?
Yesterday evening the XorianteXpress got off to a late start when the United 5:50 flight to
Denver was delayed until about 7:30 by "mechanical problems." I' m a jaded flyer, but I haven't lost a paranoid's suspicious ear for euphemism. To me "mechanical problems" means "the left wing is loose." Last year I was waiting for a flight from JFK to SFO on one of the aged 747s operated by the now-deceased Tower Air. It was delayed because I kid you not they were "waiting for the mechanic."
This SFO-DIA flight seemed even more cursed. By the time we took off at 7:30 we had already gone back to the gate because of some problem with "a light." On the ascent, somewhere over Walnut Creek, the plane seemed to start skewing left, flying a bit crabwise to its path. Then it turned right, headed west, still seeming .... not ... quite ... right. I said to the others in my party (there were four of us) "We're headed back. I think there's something wrong with an engine." Fifteen minutes later we arrived amidst a fleet of observant fire trucks and emergency vehicles, all splashing the sides of the plane with flashing red lights.
They got us on the last flight to Denver, a 757, at 9:30 or so. The pilots of the first plane joined us, and explained that indeed the left engine had "lost thrust for a while there" In other words, it wasn't working. The captain said that no, this had never happened to him before. But they were all very genial about it. I think they thought it was a fun ride, actually.
We finally got to the hotel in Denver at about 2am, local time. I got to sleep at about 3. Now it's 7 and I've got a speech to give after breakfast at 8.
Hey, maybe I'll see some of you there.
