Re: NYC Radio - Shep?
Shep was on WOR 710 AM after the 10 PM 15 minute newscast, Monday through Friday, until 11 PM (when another 15 minute newscast aired). On Saturday nights he broadcast live from the Gaslight (or maybe it was the Limelight, or some other _____light club) from 10:05 (after a 5 minute, briefer weekend newscast) until Midnight.
After Midnight he remained onstage at the club for another hour. The post-WOR content, free of WOR concerns regarding what their audience might tolerate, and Shep free of any FCC matters, would ramble freely, like a folksy sort of Lenny Bruce/Garrison Keiler hybrid.
I come by this information from tapes and first-hand reports, as I was too young to go see him, and by the time I was in my late teens and might have gone to see hum, other diversions (girlfriend, rock music, the 60's)were taking precedence.
Shep passed away in October of 1999, but it seems like only yesterday.
Excelsior!
A wonderful Shep site can be sound here.
