Re: Wednesday, July 16, 2003
Doc, Dean *was* a Governor. He didn't run in the last gubernatorial election. Funny though, after 10 years of Dean, his party was kicked out of the statehouse.
Even though I live in Vermont, I'm not a fan of the guy. While I think he's OK on most domestic issues, I don't believe he's got what it takes to rebuild the national economy. For example, he failed to strengthen the state's economy and encourage business development. Ever wonder why IBM built their new chip fab in Fishkill NY? Because NY Gov. Pataki offered incentives to the company and Dean did exactly zero (IBM is Vermont's largest private employer). When companies were laying off workers here (IBM laid off 1000 workers last year) Dean did zero.
And while I can understand there isn't much a politician can do about layoffs, s/he can promote a welcoming business climate. Let's just put it this way, when you are a chip designer or a guy running a machine in a fab, there aren't that many other employers one can look towards. (The folks who I met who were laid off most often went to work in other fields.) And in Vermont, there's a dearth of employers who pay well (don't even ask about the tech job market either).
