Hi Doc, indeed a Jabber server would fit your needs. If people really need to chat with folks on the legacy IM services, they can do so through a gateway from Jabber to those services, or by using a multi-protocol client such as Gaim, Fire, or (soon) Trillian. IRC is not an IM system, it's a groupchat system that isn't geared to talking with individuals. And it's all about the individual, dontcha know. ;-)
