TiBook question
| | Okay, I've got this old 15" Titanium Powerbook, which is quite good for just about everything but wi-fi. Like most TiBooks, the antenna is inside the titanium case, which works like a Faraday Cage. |
| | A good friend is thinking of getting a TiBook of his own, now that priceds are coming down. So he's wondering (as am I) if just getting a wi-fi card for the PCMCIA slot will do the job. I know it would probably lack some of the graces Apple bestows on its proprietary Airport card, but the better range would certainly be worth it. |
| | I see there's this, and probably other projects like it; but I gotta catch a plane. |
| | The question on the floor is really about a new machine, though. Is it too big a bummer to get a wi-fi hack for a new machine that's simply inadequate in the range dep't? |
I'm almost afraid to point this out, but...
| | Every time I come through LAX and get intercepted by a Boingo Wireless splash page, and enter my usual-for-this-stuff ID and password, I get on the Net. |
| | I'd gladly pay. And maybe I am and don't know it. That's happened twice with t-Mobile. |
| | Whatever, it's nice to be on, even for just a few minutes. Pretty tight connection. |
Heading for Jupiter

I inherited a 15 inch TiBook for which the original owner didn't buy an Airport card.
I plugged in the Lucent/Orinoco PC card I used to use with my Lombard, and it works, and has the bonus of being treated as an Airport card under OS 9 (the TiBook is running 9). Range seems at least as good as it was with that card on the Lombard, or with the Extreme card in my new PB 12".
Don't know if the Lucent card is recognized as an Airport card in OS X, but you should still see reasonable range with any supported PC card.
