Trackback is about two things. One, it's a convenient way (see Internet Topic Exchange) to track people posting about different things. It's used generically in two ways: One, as a way to have things posted in a central place (ITE). Or two, so I can just follow the links to what different people posted, having some kind of a thread for discussion. Basically, it's a model allowing reference to permalinks of posts, which "ideally" is more resilient than the link-them-in-your-blogpost model.
