Doc, going back to your Linux for suits article, you say "It's a subtle thing, but I feel the center of gravity in the software industry start to shift from platforms and applications to tools and building materials."
I'm interested in the idea of web services as builder's components provided by component service providers. In this case, the building blocks are bigger than building materials and more analogous to, say, off-the-shelf kitchen cabinets. This model is largely enabled by XML-RPC and SOAP.
Web component development engenders what's for me the ideal software development environment: an evolutionary system with a very high feedback rate: feedback from end-users on one end and builders on the other. The Darwinian effect that contributes to Open Source's success as a model applies equally well to CSPs.
