Who needs Alzheimer's when you're like this anyway?
| | Just before I got on the train to come here I realized I had forgotten the power adapter for my laptop. Fortunately, I had the one that went with the rental my friend was about to return for me. So I borrowed it. Then, five hours ago, as the Desktop Linux Summit was closing for the day, I forgot the borrowed adapter, the power bar I had also brought into the press room (just in case, which turned out to be a good idea) and the power adapter of the new MobilePC that the Lindows people had loaned me to review. I realized all this after dinner with a bunch of folks. Since I'm giving the opening keynote tomorrow and I'm using the laptop, and haven't finished preparing, and my batteries were dead, I needed that power adapter. So I spent several hours trying to find somebody with one that matched, or to get back into the building where I forgot the thing. Finally a security guy let me in. |
| | Now here I am, at almost midnight, getting ready to start what I was going to do at 7pm. |
| | Believe it or not, this is all after taking a number of measures to "simplify" things since my last misfortune with a laptop, which followed forgetting another power adapter at somebody's house in my last trip up to Palo Alto. |
| | Well, one small grace of aging is giving a much smaller shit about the faults that make me more human than I'd like. Ten or twenty years ago I would have been speeding around town and beating my head against the steering wheel along the way. This time I just punched up the jazz station and drove around practicing tomorrow's talk with a nice soundtrack. |

Despite what Dave Stutz has to say about open-source at Microsoft, this is a hot topic on .NET Nirvana, the Geek Cruise I am currently attending, offering my WIFI services for the conference. Simon Phipps of Sun, presented his Keynote on this very subject. You can read his account at his webmink.net blog, and I have mentioned briefly at my blog, moustech.info. Should open-source imply also having an "open mind?"

According to the New Zealand Herald, the " fastest mega-yacht on the planet " will be sold for the low price of 125 million New Zealand dollars. That's 63 million Euros.
Since the start of the competition, the yacht belonging to Larry Ellison, the head of Oracle and the 5th wealthiest person in the world, was present for all the American syndicate's races. Its immense tinted glass windows, which fed the rumor mill generated by the follies of his grand celebrity, also became emblematic on the Hauraki Gulf.
Now Larry Ellison wants a new yacht ... a bigger one! Katana is 74 meters long, has a basketball court and a giant movie screen, and finds itself in 6th position on the list of massive American super yachts. Three places behind is Tatoosh, belonging to Paul Allen, the co-founder of Microsoft and partner in the OneWorld challenge and ... a huge rival of Larry Ellison. Katana and Tatosh were the two largest boats at the Louis Vuitton Cup.
Legend has it that if they won a race, the Oracle sailing team were invited onboard Katana. They game the sailors played was to try to order the most exotic, incredible cuisine for the meal. Larry's chef was able to create any platter in the world with only a few hours' notice. The sailors were never able to trip him up! The article did not say if the chef would take up the game again on the new mega yacht.

At least 65 clubgoers are dead and 164 were injured after a concert by 80s act GREAT WHITE erupted in flames in WEST WARWICK, RI. The blaze began when an on-stage pyrothechnics display ignited the walls of the club and panic ensued. THE STATION nightclub was destroyed in the fire, and some individuals, including GREAT WHITE guitarist TY LONGLEY and WHJY/PROVIDENCE personality MIKE "THE DOCTOR" GONSALVES, who emceed the show, remain missing. The tragedy follows another deadly nightclub incident three days earlier in CHICAGO, where 21 died and over 50 were injured when patrons fleeing a fight were crushed at the locked exit doors.
The Doctor was the night jock. More from www.whjy.com.
I worked with Al Matthews the morning talent at WROR Boston.
