Not the worst I've been through, but it'll do for now
| | My laptop was stolen this morning. Pretty much my whole life was on it. I'm not even sure what to do next, other than go get a new pair of glasses, because they're gone too. Gotta restart somewhere. |
| | Meanwhile, blog amongst yourselves. It's gonna be awhile, I think. |

Thanks, everybody.
Sucks doesn't cover it.
I'm gonna get some sleep. In the morning I'll visit the crater where my digital life used to be, and try to come up with some strategy. I need to start by borrowing or leasing another laptop with a firewire drive, to see what the backup situation looks like. I'm not optimistic.

It looks like you run Mac stuff; I wonder if they have this type of thing: Windows 2000/XP have an under-appreciated feature called "Offline Files." This lets me take an automatically synced copy of any folder from a completely separate (also Windows 2000/XP) machine on a network, and make it available to me whether I'm connected or not.
So, I've created all my data folders on my desktop, which I then make accessible offline. When I'm connected, Windows maintains my data in *both* locations; when I disconnect, changes are monitored in each locatin, and synced when I return. So if either machine disappears or dies, you have a complete copy of data. If they both burn up, well, then you have your CDs you make periodically, and keep at the bank, right? :)
It all works very much like online/offline email.
I don't know what Mac's support is for something like this. I did look into external drives once, but Ethernet is so much faster, and usually you have a big hard drive in another computer somewhere hanging around.
Good luck!

Oh SHIT! Doc, I'm so sorry. I don't even know what to say, what to advise, because my brain is right here under my fingertips in my Dell, and, I can't imagine. It may not make a difference, but I'll say a little prayer that they catch the culprits and you're baby's safe--just out for a joy ride... Stranger things...
best,
jeneane

Been there myself, and at a bad time in my life too. Stealing a man's computer is like steeling his horse.
Here's hoping your ride is a lot smoother from now on,
Theo.
