So I just got the phone call that a dear friend died today, and I'm searching for an obituary--there were no details, no place, just that he died around noon. This is a bitter blow--I didn't think it could get any worse than the shuttle going down, but it just did.

So I've tried and failed, and now I want your help--how do you search on Google News for a name by initials--like L.B. Johnson? Or like L. B. Johnson? Or like L B Johnson? Or like LB Johnson. Or all of the above.

Sorry to hear about your friend.

Chances are nothing will show up until tomorrow's papers. There doesn't seem to be an advanced search facility on Google News. I'd just do trial & error on every possible combination of initials, name and misspelling.

I just put a notice up on the main blog page. Maybe somebody can help.

Good luck.

"L.B. Johnson""L. B. Johnson""L B Johnson""LB Johnson"

Recommend take possibilities and enter into Google News this way

It sounds like what you're looking for is any article or obituary about his death.

I've an active account at Google Answers, and I'd be quite willing to donate some credit to ask a question for you, if you can come up with one.

If you like, I'd be glad to assist; I don't have time to do the research, thanks to my day job, but the least I can do is offer to ask the question.

I think that I can possibly offer you a bit of help, too; when something is indexed on Google News, is it indexed in Google as well? That would make sense, and if it is, you should be able to use Google as usual to find the articles of interest.

I wish I could help further. Feel free to contact me if you wish.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

Go to Altavista News search and search the following:

Johnson died -Space

In the date selector choose Today/Yesterday

The "-Space" tells AV to exclude "Johnson Space Center" from the search results.

Try forcing a phrase search like this: l-b-johnson

Looks like we found two identical copies of a story about an L.B. Johnson dying. One of those stories, on The Sporting News, has moved their url. But you can click to turn off filtering of duplicate stories to pick up the same story on CBS SportsLine.

http://news.google.com/news?q=l-b-johnson&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&filter=0

Hope this helps, GoogleGuy

As it turns out, my problem was not with Google News itself, but with a local version of urinal^H^H^H^H^H^Hjournalism which relegates obituaries to the classified advertisements. That's out of scope for Google News, so my friend wasn't there.

And thanks to everyone who looked for an L. B. Johnson--that's not my friend's name. I just had LBJ on my mind lately and, since my friend was a private man, I took advantage of his name to fuzz up the situation. The isn't much privacy these days--that's my tiny contribution to it.
