Weighing evils
It's unlikely that the events in Britain's North American colonies in 1776 would have been successful without support from France; we called that a "revolution", and the same language might well apply to current events in Iraq, which will most likely result in the Iraqi National Congress taking power in Baghdad, amidst much celebration on the part of the Iraqi people. Something similar happened in Afghanistan recently as well. These events are self-defense in a world where the most significant threats to peace and security are extra-national, technically sophisticated terrorist organizations, and old rules about first strikes and reaction no longer apply.
