Federated ID - a difficult selling job.
Great to hear someone else is talking about 'Relationship management' which to me, is as important as the technology that drives a federated ID system. In fact, all a federated ID system consists is technology at the moment. There's no large perceived benefit to a federated ID system for the user. Here's the response I've been getting through talking to people about federated ID. "Sure, I get one username and password, and perhaps a few other neat features, but I get on just fine with my 'n' amount of username and passwords right now... besides, it's all just a bit Orwellian for me... there's a comfort in having all my data held in seperate silos"
Of course, Fed.ID is very convenient for business and no doubt corporations salivate at the thought of all the data they can glean from such an infrastructure. But, we just aint going to sell it to Joe Public until such time as Fed.ID systems offer a user complete transparency, control and customisation of sets of their data. An exceptionally flexible system is required to allow users to represent themselves differently to different organisations. After all, that's how we do it in the real world. I don't represent myself the same way to my bank manager as I do to my fitness instructor and I don't let either of them know as much about me as I do my doctor...
