AOL is in the position of touting itself as a media company that acts as if it has no media. They've remained a delivery platform for media. The Time Warner deal should have been transformational for AOL, morphing its persona into the leading provider of information, with AOL's ISP business relegated to the background. Instead, AOL is still perceived, rather correctly, as some kind of humongous $21.95 per month ISP.
They're still selling pipes, even though they bought the oil fields.
