Rest of day
| | We built shelves today. Can't wait to get all the books off the floor. |
| | Took a break to see the new Harry Potter this afternoon. Didn't suck as much as we expected. Nice story with terrific effects. Not nearly as scary as the first movie. This was good for the kid, because he could keep his hands off his eyes for most of the movie. |
| | Afterwards we came home, sat in the rocking chair outside and watched Orion rise. The kid wanted to know if Rigel, the second brightest (or at least the beta) star in the constellation, was a blue giant since the brightest star, Betelgeuse, is a red giant. I didn't know. |
| | "It's an icy blue," he said. I explained that it was still very hot. "I know that," he said. Then he talked about travelling there. |
| | The moon wasn't up yet, so we could barely make out the Milky Way, even though the lights of the town below gave an orange glow to the air to the South. |
| | The kid spotted the galaxy Andromeda straight overhead. I could barely see it. "It's not dark enough to see the arms," he said. I said I had heard that Andromeda and the Milky Way were on a collision course and due to become one galaxy in about three billion years, which was about the same age as most diamonds found on Earth. |
