Loose beginnings
I'm in Las Vegas, getting ready for tomorrow, disobeying my better judgement about using the laptop knowing that browser cache and other little filelets are possibly overwriting erased email I'd like to rescue... and hoping that what I'veunerased already, copying over to another drive, is most or all of the raw data.
There are sooo many emails sent since last Wednesday that I need to get at. I just had to do... something. Among the ones I've read are pointers to this cool Cluetrain reference, and this one too.
It's been slow going, but thanks to my good pal and ace hacker Dave Sifry, I am now running fetchmail to scope out mail from the server (while leaving it there), and replying in mutt. This will all be much easier to do after I get the new Linux server, whatever it will be, running at the house, or wherever it will end up.
Anyway, lotta catching up to do, but now at least I'm in a better position to do it.
By the way, huge thanks for all the help piling up in the Discussion section. Most appreciated.
The Daily Kvetch
I'm leaving in the rain, using my sister's Dell for the last time on this trip. This afternoon I hit Las Vegas with a laptop I'll leave idle until I get home, when I can get Eudora and Norton on the phone for a couple of long conversations.
Yesterday I did a file search using Norton for erased items containing my email address, and three hours later had a list of more than 211,000 items. When I selected all of them and hit "recover," it told me after an hour that "an error occurred."
Neither Norton nor Eurdora offer help, even for paid or premium users, on weekends, near as I can tell. I don't have time to screw with it anyway.
So if any of ya'll are sending me email, hold off until Wednesday or later. Sorry about that.
Leaving stuff on the discussion page seems to work well.
Can't wait to return to normal, whatever that is.
See ya in Vegas.
