Famous lasting words
It had been too long since I'd checked in on Brian Linse's blog. When I went there a few minutes ago I was shocked to read what is now old bad news: Warren Zevon has inoperable lung cancer.
I almost met Warren at Brian's L.A. blog party in July. At the time I thought he must be this Tony Pierce guy everyone was talking about, but I missed talking to him. Tony too.
 Anyway, an extreme bummer.
Here's an excellent L.A. Times piece about him. Shows a guy whose gonzo character remains in full force. (Wow: it says we're the same age.)
Long known as a methodical, less-than-prolific artist, Zevon is now in a different gear.
"I've been working frantically," he said. "But you know, imminent doom lowers the bar a bit."
Here's a precient lyric from his album Life'll kill ya.
Some get the awful, awful diseases
Some get the knife; some get the gun;
And some get to die in their sleep
At the age of a hundred and one.
But life'll kill ya.

You had to be there
I just checked out KPIG's MP3 stream. They're playing recordings of live concerts, rather than their live stream, which is offered currenly only through a RealAudio subscription (available currently only to Windows users, which sucks, but we're used to it).
I don't know what's on there exactly, but what they just played was a knockout song. Amazing.
I like the featured PigSqueal joke (scroll down) too.

And you thought your job sucked
I just got a call from a telemarketer from AT&T. He sounded like a recording, but he wasn't. He just played one on the phone.

Blog of the Day
Another legal bleagle: Delaware Law Office, by Larry D. Sullivan. I found it by looking up "clear rights" on Google. That led me to a post that points back to something I wrote. Circular, no?
I also found something on the subject from Ernie the Attorney:
So why doesn't Hollywood fight all of these land grabs and raise a stink about how it is crippling their ability to make films?  I guess it's because the marginal cost of having to clear rights (even to the point of paying people who might not really deserve it) is meaningless to a big budget film.  But it's not a small cost to the fledging filmmaker.  And so if you do the math you can see that the net effect is to hamper creativity, which is the opposite of "promoting" it. This is another example of  how the law disconnects from common sense.
Reading that also inspired me to post a comment (the bottom one) answering another comment to a story I wrote recently.

MTBC, about two hours
I use two browsers most of the time on OS X: Mozilla 1.1 and IE 5.2.1. Both crash, reliably and frequently (Mozilla slightly less so). I'd like to use OMNI or Opera, but both still lack (as far as I know — I may be missing some clues) the formfilling and history features of the Leading Two, which are dealbreakers for me.
Under Classic a crash would have also brought the OS down, or at least required a prudent restart, so I guess I should be grateful.
[Later...] I'm downloading OMNI and Opera to give them another shot.

His Guard let him down
Ben Hammersly corrects the Guardian's edit of the opening paragraph of his latest piece for the paper. The original:
Aunty Beeb is a slut. Take the internet, for example. There's not a subject that hasn't got her flashing her online knickers up and down the Strand. News? No problem. Sports? Certainly. Education? Both O and A-levels, my dear, no extra charge.
Makes it a much more tempting link to follow than the cleaned-up — no, make it blurred-up — version.

Have two hearts
Saw Bonnie Raitt & Lyle Lovett last night at the Santa Barbara Bowl. Outstanding show.
I've seen Bonnie more times than I can count, all back in North Carolina, which I left 17 years ago. She's so freaking good. Still. Older now, but shit, so am I.
Lyle was a first. Exactly as I expected except for whatever the hell was wrong with his leg. He had this brace contraption around the calf of his right leg, with spikes that looked like they went in through the skin. Kinda hard to ignore. He performed mostly sitting down, except for the encores with Bonnie.
Hmm... maybe there's something on the Web about the dal with the leg. Let's see...
Shit! His leg was crushed by a rampaging bull. Nasty. That was in March, and here it's September. Boy. Here's more.
Anyway, they were both outstanding. So were their bands. If you get a chance to catch a show, go for it. They wrap the current tour in San Diego on the 21st and in L.A. on ther 22nd and 23rd.
