RE: "What if I want to get in? Software companies such as Microsoft and Apple seem very reluctant to write the software that would make setting up your home computer as a server a snap. " and "In fact both Microsoft and Apple do have easy-to-use software for at least some of that stuff (setting up a Web server for example)."
There's an interesting product, "Go to My PC" from expertcity (www.expertcity.com), that allows you to log into your computer from any other computer over the WWW. It currently requires a Windows computer as the serving machine, but if you have such at home, with a persistant connection, you can log on to it from a Linux, Max, UNIX or Windows computer that has a browser that supports JAVA. It helps to have a fast connection on both ends, but it works great. And it's apparently secure, and will become more so.
It isn't free, but the price isn't bad. If this is actually important to you, then check it out.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Apple offer it as an additional service on their hosted offering sometime in the future.
(Disclaimer, I don't work for, nor do I resell Go to My PC. I have an account, and have found it invaluable for finding that file I left at the office. Etc.)
