Sorry I'm a day out of touch, but I've been on airplanes flying across Oz, so missed this <http://doc-weblogs.com/2002/08/15#adventuresInCoolness> ...
Lotsa work in XML interfaces to mapping and other geospatial data going on. Have a look at my colleague Simon Cox's <http://www.ned.dem.csiro.au/CoxSimon/> stuff on the OpenGIS consortium tech committees and a variant for the minerals exploration and mining biz I'm employed by.
SOAP and/or XML-RPC are very definitely in the works.
