Re: Friday, August 2, 2002
Hi, Doc: OK. Let's set everyone up with PingID. Now, when I want to buy a book from Amazon.com, I look to hook up with their PingID, but they don't have it. So, I email them, tell them to get PingID, and I'll buy their book. Otherwise, I go someplace else. Is that how it's done?
Seems like you're trying to say, "I'm a customer, not a consumer. Here's my PingID, here's your sign, stupid." Did you see that email that floats around, "Here's your sign, stupid." Has a bunch of anecdotes. One is about the guy that drives into the gas station with a flat tire. Attendant looks, and says, "Did you get a flat?" The guy says, "No, I was just driving down the freeway, and those three tires just swelled up on me for no reason. Here, here's your sign."
Well, you're right. Let's put the PingID out there, and everyone talks it up, uses it, and spreads the word. Can my Mom use it? She's older, and won't give up AOL, 'cause she doesn't want anything new.
We could couple that with the Creative Commons "tagging" and begin to boycott sites that don't display the right "tag". My older Mom thinks that's doable.
Finally, we have a growing sense out there, that filtering has its' place in the world. Filtering sites that need to be filtered, like HP! At least until they rectify the harm they caused with the Bruce Perens tragedy.
