Why won't Preview let me highlight and copy any text? I can't believe there would be any reason other than to prevent copying. Why else subtract a value like that?
Because Doc, its name is Preview, like in "just a glimpse." It's a small program, little more than a utility really. Most of its functionality seems aimed at viewing graphics, with some conversion functions, viewing PDF was probably just thrown in because Quartz supports PDF as the default document model.
I think you're looking too hard for DRM conspiracies here. I suspect DVD Player doesn't support screen captures more for technical reasons more so than some accomodation with Satan. It's a software-based DVD decoder, it doesn't use a hardware decoder, there may be legitimate performance issues attendant to offering that functionality.
But, maybe you're right. Maybe it is all just an evil conspiracy to deny us the pleasure of snapping screenshots of Carrie Anne Moss in, what is that anyway? vinyl? latex? leather? Whatever, she's a babe, and I've been frustrated too by the inability to grab screenshots.
Ambrosia's screenshot utility will allow you to grab screenshots of DVDs if you've got nVidia graphics hardware. Why couldn't they support ATI? A special deal with Jack Valenti? Who knows?
Whatever. DRM is a problem for customers, but I don't think your frustration with Preview and DVD Player are the result of DRM issues. I could be wrong.
