You hit the nail on the head, Doc. A buddy and I built Arwen a few years back for a few hundred bucks, stuck FreeBSD on her, and she's been happily serving up my media ever since.
Before leaving the US in January for my indefinitely-long New Zealand/travelblogging trip, I moved her to my Dad's cable modem and haven't had a problem yet. 'Course, I'm a bit anxious, because Charter could shut the whole works down in a heartbeat by tapping a few keys; then I'd be SOL. But I'll cross that bridge if and when I get to it.

P.S. And BTW, Dreamhost has some great plans- 900 MB for $40/month, etc.
