It is all down to HTTP
Actually it is all down to HTTP and HTTPS. Most corporate firewalls will only allow port 80 and some will even look to see if it is a valid HTTP request (ie. "GET /", etc.). Many other protocols will be blocked. SMTP, POP3 and IMAP will be restricted to the company servers. Just try to get a Realaudio stream on a firewalled service. POP3, FTP and Telnet are seen as major security holes as they send passwords in the clear.
Unfortunately, the war has been won for protocols, HTTP/HTTPS on TCP on IP is it.
