Well first I don't think you want to "fist home in" - but "first home in".
Secondly I just wish you 'net folks' would stop harping on that it's about "the people - mahn!" - that makes the Internet what it is. You're starting to sound like Howard Reingold :-)
There are plenty good products - that we use everyday - that aren't about "bringing people together." Being able to find out the name of a song playing - is so critical to the music business moving forward, that it's benefits will FAR outreach the necessity for "bringing people together".
Europe is WAY ahead of the U.S. in their digital radio capabilities. I was once at a basketball game in Trieste, Italy (which is a third tier league team) and as we got into our car in the parking lot, they already had the score of the game - on the radio LED display. So not ALL information goes out over the WWW!
This is another example of little clue (or as you would say "how clueless") the music industry is - about technology. Maybe they'd get the idea that providing a way for people to find out the name of a song - is a GOOD THING!
But unfortunately no matter which way we turn, it's still about taking money from our wallets and putting it into the hands of a crooked music industry!
Face it - 'the reason why Shazam will succeed or fail will be 99% based upon who's brand, marketing dollars (or pounds in that case), mafia payoffs and back-room white male power brokering - that goes on' - that it's associated with.
This is the same with great ideas for telematics like 37BetterMotors, Portable Mobile Communicators or Zero Configuring networking.
:-)
That's what we should be focused on!
