Bloggers on the half cruise

Blogging the cruise:

Corrected.

Dori just told me I was quoting without linking.

Craftrolling

Had a great time in Ketchikan, where the boat still sits, one among three, each bigger than the town itself, all parked at the dock, which is one side of the town's main drag. They're big as clone troop carriers from Star Wars, and look like removable buildings, which they are.

At the far side of the town (a three-block walk), up against the slope of the first hill, is a beautiful creek above the shores of which a series of wooden buildings on poles house gift and craft shops, mostly a cut above the usual kind. The buildings are connected by boardwalks, and the feel of the place was remarkably warm and natural, in spite of the market, which I'm sure is about 99% tourists.

At the south end of the boardwalk the Tlingit carver Norman Jackson was sitting with a young boy, carving on two beautiful pieces: one based on a raven and another on a beaver. We sat for awhile chewing the fat with him while ravens squawked overhead. He explained casually that they usually show up when he's working outside. I wanted to talk longer but our own boy was getting antsy and we had to get back to the boar.

Anyway, Norman's a good guy who does outstanding work. He also has a nice Web site with a gallery and a store. Check him out.

Like I said

David Coursey: TiVo: Why I hate the company — but love the product. Background: Whose side is TiVo on?

What is the shape of one cube melted?

Dumb overheard cruise ship questions:

  • Are you the desk?
  • What time does the 8:15 show start?
  • Why is the ship leaning?
  • Is this the size of the pool?
  • We don't want this elevator. We want the one that goes to the other end of the ship.
  • Do these stairs go up as well as down?
  • The helicopters are too loud.
  • What do you do with the ice sculpture after it melts?

Glenn said that last one was "almost a Zen coan."

Catching Ketchican

This is the first truly gloomy day on the trip. Things have been fairly dry and calm, in spite of wetter and windier forecasts.

We're pulling into Ketchican right now. Still no cell coverage. I've gotta make a meeting, then we go ashore. Haven't even read my email yet.
