Re: Letter by IT CEOs to Entertainment CEOs
This is an evil, evil thing. It's basically a come-on for the entertainment industry to start screwing over consumers with the assistance of technology companies. As if they don't do a good enough job of destroying consumer rights by lobbying politicians, now the tech industry wants to help them?
I mean, a letter from Michael Dell and Steve Ballmer to
Michael Eisner, Gerald Levin, and Rupert Murdoch?
Bleech. Let's look at some key quotes:
We recognize the critical importance of effective anti-piracy tools in this changing market environment, and that the absence of such tools may affect the development of new product offerings.
What about the critical importance of consumer rights, freedom of speech, and open standards?
For instance, these voluntary groups have successfully formed consensus on key technologies, making it possible to distribute movies in protected environments such as in DVD format
hahahahahahaha
This totally cracks me up. They are putting forward CSS as a positive example of a protection scheme? They must be on crack. For starters, it isn't even effective (it was cracked by a 16-year old, and anyone can get the software to circumvent it). It is also very intrusive to the consumer, and just doesn't make sense (the zone system).
If this is the kind of thing they want to push, then I say have a nice day in hell, "IT CEOs".
I thought IT was supposed to stand for "Information Technology", not "Information Terrorism".
