I would hesitate to make an analogy between two 'things' that share the same geneaology, not to mention that Gutenberg's impact on modern life should be left to stand alone. Gutenberg not only gave The Media a way of mass distribution of written works, created an outlet for writers and Dichters, but also helped promote the evolution and range of communication and language. With the help of the Reformation, which was directly dependant on the printing press, as it would have been impossible to spread biblical teachings on such a large scale without printed material. It is through the Reformation and Martin Luther that the German language became a major language, in terms of use and written material. English, as we all know, is a Germanic language. So, I think personal publishing software authors do indeed deserve a free lunch, but Dave lives too far away. also on my blog
