So Americans are still pretty dumb about science. Well, someone who said that 50% of Americans were pretty dumb about *everything* would probably be attacked as a commie, pinko, stuck up European! But of course it's true, and with the state of teaching, mass media and subtle propaganda, it's hardly surprising. And America certainly doesn't have a monopoly on stupidity. The whole of the West suffers from similar problems.
One interesting take on this article might be to reflect on the surprising success of the pro-creationism/anti-evolution meme. A complete lack of scientific understanding is perhaps a pre-requisite for belief in this. I feel that if you follow these beliefs what you are actually doing is denying the whole scientific method. And you should therefore join the Amish and give up your SUV. The reality of the history and progress of science is nowhere near as clean and rational as scientists would have you believe but it has been extremely successful.
But given that 50% of everyone has below average intelligence, can we actually draw any conclusions from this report at all, at all?
