Bite A Lick Equals Nicking? . . . .
"The question is not whether I should bite a lick, chord, or super juicy note but from whom? The Beatles called it "nicking" and I think it might have worked out for them. I say it's all fair game. Now I'm not advising that you rip-off a whole song and claim it as your own, but you should learn other peoples music, trademark licks, and rhythms. It can only make you better. When I was in college an old jazzer told me the formula was this: Imitation, Assimilation, Innovation. Makes sense to me. You learn somebody else's stuff (imitation), make it your own (assimilation), and use all the pieces you've gathered to forge new ground (innovation)."

Food for Thought, dedicated to the RIAA, whose primary goal in this life, is to restrict such notions to a few, a chosen few.
