The Geek Cruises, of Palo Alto, PERL Whirl Q&A speaker's session, aboard the Holland America ship Veendam, is discussing PERL 6, the not yet ready upgrade to PERL 5. Speakers Peter Scott, Mark - Jason Dominus, Damian Conway, and Randal Schwartz (moderated by Neil Bauman) are fielding questions about the future of PERL against the advances of JAVA in the corporate world. Larry Wall, one of the PERL Whirl speakers, is not on stage at this time. (30% of the attendees are sitting in the Wajang Theater checking their email via the wireless LAN we have set up just for this cruise, while listening and asking questions. This is a realtime report from PERL Whirl.) The group is the United Nations of PERL: Austrailia, Cuba (by birth), Netherlands, Northern Ireland, are all represented. (There is a strong contingency of attendees from Tennessee, as there was on LINUX Lunacy. MOUStech.NET, the wireless service provider, is a Tennessee LLC. The Florida based Digital Seas is the Internet Service provider.)
Today the geeks spent the day either on St. Thomas or St. Johns. I coordinated a small group of geeks going over to Trunk Bay on St. Johns, one of the nicest beaches in the world, according to Frommers and Berlitz. Snorkling the coral reef was like mind candy. It's a hard job....
