Re: Sunday, January 13, 2002
It's 11 pm, formal night on the Veendam, and the Library has become the alternative geek wireless Internet Cafe. It would appear that Geek Cruises is having a wireless adapter configuration fest, as we continue to try to get every possible wireless card and operating system to at least ping the Digital Seas gateway. We even dropped an ethernet switch into the fiber optic connection in the Internet Cafe for those who can't get their wireless adapters to configure. (Unlike at Linux Lunacy, during PERL Whirl I have a key to the system cabinet, and the Internet access is open). The Internet Cafe manager is permitting reasonable use of one or two Cafe cubilces for geeks to wire directly into the ethernet switch, a major difference from Linux Lunacy. Otherwise, the Library is the real Internet Cafe aboard the Veendam. The leather seats are also more comfortable. Neil Bauman hosted a wine and cheese reception in the Card Room next to the Internet Cafe, but many of us ended up drinking champagne in the Library or Cafe while logging onto email. Someone suggested we get one of the bars to delegate someone to provide drink services in the Library. But the real purpose for the conference is PERL.
