Digging dirt
| | Halleys Comment gives me good advice for today: slow down. He also kindly attributes my tendency to lose things to the presence of a kindergarten-age kid in the household, rather than the Attention Deficit Disorder with which I would surely have been labeled if distractability had been a recognized syndrome in 1952. |
| | So today is gardening day. We're planting lettuce, arugula, bok choy, swiss chard, broccoli and a mess of herbs. The boy has his boots and gloves on, and is standing at the door, busting me for avoiding hard work just like my kindergarten teacher did forty-nine years ago. |
8 on X
| | With a little (okay, a lot) of help from Brent and Dave, I'm up on Radio 8 on OS X. It looks and feels wonderful. I just wish I had something more to say, but it's pushing 1am and I need to sleep. Stay tuned, if not awake. |

It's 11 pm, formal night on the Veendam, and the Library has become the alternative geek wireless Internet Cafe. It would appear that Geek Cruises is having a wireless adapter configuration fest, as we continue to try to get every possible wireless card and operating system to at least ping the Digital Seas gateway. We even dropped an ethernet switch into the fiber optic connection in the Internet Cafe for those who can't get their wireless adapters to configure. (Unlike at Linux Lunacy, during PERL Whirl I have a key to the system cabinet, and the Internet access is open). The Internet Cafe manager is permitting reasonable use of one or two Cafe cubilces for geeks to wire directly into the ethernet switch, a major difference from Linux Lunacy. Otherwise, the Library is the real Internet Cafe aboard the Veendam. The leather seats are also more comfortable. Neil Bauman hosted a wine and cheese reception in the Card Room next to the Internet Cafe, but many of us ended up drinking champagne in the Library or Cafe while logging onto email. Someone suggested we get one of the bars to delegate someone to provide drink services in the Library. But the real purpose for the conference is PERL.

Just wait: I'll bring a 3Com Wireless Workgroup Bridge along. It allows up to 4 MAC addresses (four devices of any kind that use wired Ethernet) to connect via itself to ANY access point! It's very slick, somewhat expensive ($350) and will bridge that wired/wireless gap on the cruise!
