Re: Thursday, December 27, 2001
I paid about $350 for mine about 10-11 years ago. That's another thing about the 2010 -- it's been around for a long time as far as consumer electronics go. It is certainly a workhorse.
I haven't had much trouble with strong local signals, but it's not as bad here in Seattle as it is in SF, LA or NY. Multipath is a bitch, though.
I've been tempted by the SW1 several times, but I don't travel enough to justify it.
I miss listening to the BBC world service via shortwave. It's just not the same hearing it over the local NPR affiliate. The fading in and out of the signal made it sound like you were hearing something rare and special.
I used to get up early to hear Radio Australia come on the air. Five minutes before airtime they'd start broadcasting this really cheesy electronic toy version of "Waltzing Matilda" to claim the airwaves, and then start the news. I was amazed at the things I heard about over RA, stories about India quelling protests by gunning down demonstrators, and other various Asian issues that are getting a lot more airtime now.
Nowadays, of course, it's easier to hear and read all of this stuff on the Internet. I go through periods of radio mania, scanning the local ether to see what's going up. I remember building an interface that hooked the discriminator of my radio to the computer so I could decode digital communications. Fun stuff.
