Merry go round
| | My head is spinning a bit here, since this is the first Christmas in my life when we did everything the day before. Our grown daughters had other commitments for Chrismas day, so we pretended yesterday was today, and did the whole thing then. Today we'll just mellow out and play with all our new stuff. |

It's the SMTP server setting. If you use this host - smtp.earthlink.net - you may have some better success getting mail outbound. I found it at
http://help.earthlink.net/techsupport/xmldocs/macintosh/os_x/email/mail/2919.help.html
Otherwise - use your Mac OS X box (or some other Unix variant) and bring up an SMTP service in your area...have mail applications point to your local SMTP service for outbound.
Merry Christmas from someone who grew up in "eye range" of the WABC tower.

I think the latter is the key. We still get this:
"The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. Server response '550 relaying to <name@domain.com> prohibited by administrator. (Account: 'elusername', SMTP server: smtp.earthlink.net'. Error number: X800ccc79)"

sigh...
some would suggest Postfix...or a favorable ISP who will let you relay (which it really isn't).
My ISP simply allows it's customers to send mail, no open relay...
