Using Earthlink SMTP
You have to prime the pump: someone may have already told you this. When you check Earthlink POP mail from a non-Earthlink IP, Earthlink automatically adds that IP address to its legal outbound SMTP servers. But it takes (in my experience on this trip) up to a minute for that to rotate through.
So I have a little setup in my Entourage X for OS X: prime Earthlink. I run a POP retrieval, do other things, and then do a full send. Works like a charm. Sometimes I have to wait 30 seconds and try again, but it works every time.
This method is smart and many ISPs are pursuing it.
When Boingo ships its client, you'll be able to use authenticated SMTP from any network to send outbound email. Hint: you could sign up for this free service on a PC and then use authenticated SMTP from your Mac. Most Mac email programs support authenticated service.
