Mirthlink?
| | Her problem: she needs to pick up and send mail on her Earthlink account. EL will let her pick up her POP mail, but not send it, unless she's talking over her own dial-up account. I have the same problem on my own Earthlink account, but I rarely use it (see below), so it hasn't been an issue. |
| | I know this has something to do with limiting spam and all that, but I'm hoping one of ya'll will know a workaround. We can't seem to find anything on the EL site. |
| | Thanks, and Merry Christmas to ya'll. |
Mainspam
| | For the heck of it I just checked my Earthlink mail account, which I hadn't visited in over a year. More than 2600 messages came down. Most were spam from nobodies or e-notifications from Earthlink itself, but a surprising amount of unsolicited promotional spam came from household names: |
| | - Harris Poll
- IBM
- JC Penny
- Mapquest
|
Wireless interstructure, cont'd
| | Nice response from Glenn on the betting line for Boingo's intent to support more than one platform. |
2-way radio
| | And I appreciate his weighing in, too. |
Chinux
| | Here's Dan on Linux in China. Good piece, with lots of good points. |
| | I haven't said it before here, but I believe that Linux' best opportunities as a desktop OS are in what we used to call the Third World. And, meaning no disrespect at all, I include China in that category. |
Merry Christmas Eve
| | Christmas comes a day early in our house this year, which means the Santa visitation is in progress, even as I blog. Excuse me while I give the old man a hand... |

You have to prime the pump: someone may have already told you this. When you check Earthlink POP mail from a non-Earthlink IP, Earthlink automatically adds that IP address to its legal outbound SMTP servers. But it takes (in my experience on this trip) up to a minute for that to rotate through.
So I have a little setup in my Entourage X for OS X: prime Earthlink. I run a POP retrieval, do other things, and then do a full send. Works like a charm. Sometimes I have to wait 30 seconds and try again, but it works every time.
This method is smart and many ISPs are pursuing it.
When Boingo ships its client, you'll be able to use authenticated SMTP from any network to send outbound email. Hint: you could sign up for this free service on a PC and then use authenticated SMTP from your Mac. Most Mac email programs support authenticated service.

That's exactly what I do with my searls.com mail through my ISP (xo.com), even though I connect to the web through CoxAtHome. But it doesn't work with Earthlink. I'll check again.
Thanks!

Maybe I'm missing something, but is there a good reason why can't she use your SMTP server? Most ISPs don't check the address in outbound email - usually they're just checking the source IP to limit outbound mail to their customers. Most of the laptop owners I know have their outbound set to "mail", since that works as-is most places.
