Re: How GIF became property of Unisys
It's been several years since I dug into this—I was once the product manager for a product that may have written GIFs—but as I recall the reason Unisys claims GIF is because it uses LZW compression, for which they hold the patent. Check out John Barkaus's "LZW and GIF explained."
