U.S.-based Internet music radio still on death row 
| | We listen to a lot of different Internet radio stations on our household sound system (a Sonos), but I'd guess the one we listen to most is probably WCPE, from North Carolina. |
| | Alas, WCPE might be lost to us soon, if the Copyright Royalty Board, the RIAA, SoundExchange have their way. Those Vogons would rather do the wrong thing — price those stations off the pipes with prohibitive royalty rates — than work with them to help build a healthy and growing market for music that serves artists, listeners and everybody else. |
| | This week Deborah Proctor, founder and general manager of WCPE, spoke to the Independent about two bills recently introduced in Congress to save Internet radio: one in the Senate and the other in the House. Speaking of the Senate bill, Deborah said, One of the provisions of the Internet Radio Equality Act is to put Internet public radio in the correct section of copyright law, where public radio broadcasting is right now. It's written to include every public radio station and every educational institution, so that should they later on decide to begin Webcasting, they will be coved by this. That's why this is really an important bill. |
| | I haven't looked at the bills yet. But I gotta say: pretty much anything that gives these stations relief is better than ghd rolling train wreck that's followed the DMCA over the nine years since it was passed. |

| | Had a fine time at the Palace Grill (our excellent and highly convivial local Cajun restaurant last night, where we were pleased to find Mark Collier entertaining diners, as he does most Friday nights. |
