The streaming url for the station should be pointed to a .pls file. All current mp3 players - both proprietary and open source - understand how to handle these files or can be easily configured to do so. In short, the stream has to be friendly for Firefox/Mozilla/Opera/Safari users as well as IE users. |

| | Unrelated: Somewhere I have an open reel tape, recorded sometime in the early '60s, of KKHI — KYOU's ancestor on 1550am — in Maywood, New Jersey. The station at the time was just 5,000 watts at night (now it's 10,000), and just as directional as they are now (to the Northwest of the transmitter by Highway 101 in Belmont, aimed toward San Francisco). But I think they were testing in non-directional mode while the station they protected on the channel — Classical CBE in Windsor, Ontario (across the river from Detroit), was off the air for transmitter maintenance. For many years, KKHI was a landmark classical AM and FM station. The classical format was dropped in 1994. |
| | Ah, I just found this remarkable history of the station (up through the late '90s), by Fred Krock, who has been around Bay Area radio since 1950. provides a terrific long-view perspective on what's happening today. He was with the station for many years; and I imagine he was manning the transmitter when I heard it in New Jersey. |
