Casting about
| | Here's Effern on KYOU news, which has everybody all excited: Let me get the obvious goofball statement out of the way, and say "kinda defeats the purpose, doesn't it?" |
| | OK, now to the more serious issue. My wife and I were talking about Podcasts the other night, and I noted that it¹s somewhat surprising that nobody (to my knowledge) has assigned a "P-band" to podcasts. Like PSOV or PTVT. |
| | As those words left my mouth, I quickly back-pedaled, remembering one of Doc¹s admonishments that if we choose to use the language of conventional (read: regulated) media to describe home-made (read: unregulated) media, such people are bringing sure doom to what could be a "free, unhindered except by creativity and imagination sort of undertaking. And by "doom", I mean laws, regulations, fines, fees, licenses, and all of that other fun stuff. |
| | So I find it somewhat odd that Doc is seemingly backing off from that stance. It made sense to me personally to get in the habit of saying "programs" instead of "shows", or even "podcast" instead of Radio. What changed? |
| | So, to clarify: It's a cool thing for broadcasting. I'm not sure it's a cool thing for podcasting. Though I am sure it was inevitable. |
| | I didn't say that yesterday because I wanted to think about it. And I'm not going to say much more about it today, because I have to fly home from Boston, and I want to walk a little more around Harvard Square first. |
| | But I'll leave you with this in the meantime: KYOU may be about "you"; but it's not about free speech, for the simple reason that speech on radio is highly regulated. |
| | Speech on podcasting isn't regulated. Yet. |
| | Multiple bonus linkage, as well as the longest post on the matter, from Jeff Jarvis. |
| | [Later...] This from Dave Slusher. Strong stuff. I'm inclined to agree, by the way. But I want to know more about what they're doing. So far it looks like "free content" for a station that needs to cut its talent costs to zero. But then... what if it takes off? What if new "stars" emerge? Will they start paying the talent then? Interesting questions. Stay tuned. |
| | Will they podcast on the Web as well? That only makes sense. No time to research that, here in Denver, half way between Boston and home. |
