Coincidence?
Item #1: Survey: Majority Favor Media Content Regulation. An excerpt:
Roughly half of Americans surveyed by think tank The Freedom Forum say the media currently has too much freedom.  Of those surveyed, 49% said the media was too free and 39% said there was too much government censorship.  Roughly 59% said the current amount of government regulation of TV entertainment was "just right," while 16% said there is "too much" and 21% said there is "too little."
 Full results here (a .pdf).
Item #2, from an FCC Daily Digest:
As part of the Commission¹s effort to better understand whether broadcast stations are serving the needs and interests of their local communities, and whether any behavioral regulation is needed, Chairman Powell recently established a Localism Task Force to gather empirical data on broadcast localism, and to advise the Commission on concrete steps to promote this significant policy goal. 17 In order to hear directly from the public about the localism efforts of broadcasters, the Task Force is charged with conducting a number of field hearings around the country. The Task Force has already held three of these events (Charlotte, North Carolina; San Antonio, Texas; and Rapid City, South Dakota), during which it heard from the public, with a wide variety of views, on the issue of whether and how broadcasters are serving the needs and interests of their communities. The Task Force will soon hear from the public in other areas of the country.
Like the obvious is insufficiently apparent.
Item #3, Dick Morris, explaining why John Kerry is running for president by hiding from media sight:
Will the real John Kerry emerge from the shadows then? Don't bet on it. The senator's canned appearances at his party convention are not likely to improve our knowledge of his credentials, character or political ideology.
So until August, at the earliest, the Democratic Party will be represented by a man few of us know.
If this is his strategy, Kerry's being wise. Modern politics is a lot like modern warfare, where precision-guided munitions never miss. The best way to avoid being killed is to avoid being seen.
As Dean found out between November and January, and Bush learned in April and May, when you are the center of attention, your risk of political mortality is very high.
Only the stealth candidate ‹ the modern dark horse, who hides in the shadows of his opponent ‹ can make it all the way to the finish line intact.
Thanks to Jeff Jarvis for that one.

Coasting
It's 4am Eastern time, 1am Pacific. In a little while I'll be flying back home from Boston to Santa Barbara. I should make it in time to participate in this afternoon's Gillmor Gang.
The last one, from Supernova, is here.

Overheard
Doug Kaye's latest IT Conversation is with Yours Truly. Here's the audio, and here's the transcript.
For another interview of a very different sort, dig Christopher Lydon's visit with Colm Toibin at the cemetary where William and Henry James are buried. It's highly literate and far more than six feet deep.

Have a happy Q3
Can't believe it's July already. Wondering if Miranda knows it's 2004 already. I wouldn't know anything about her if she didn't have major Google juju.
